The new security and fire station began operating at Erfurt-Weimar Airport in 2000. This building houses the fire brigade control office and the airport’s security headquarters with appropriate communication and surveillance technology.
The fire station has a total of eleven parking bays (including one mobile command vehicle, three airfield fire engines, one powder fire engine, one ambulance, one crane, one rescue vehicle with rescue platform and loading crane, and one hose reel).
Erfurt-Weimar Airport is classified in fire protection category 7 (9 on request) of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) regulations, meaning 38,000 litres of water are taken onboard the fire engines along with the necessary foaming agents and 3,000 kg of extinguisher powder.
The three Ziegler airfield fire engines (Z8) can dispense a total of 18,000 litres of water-foam mixture per minute from the roof jets, reaching distances of approx. 80 metres.
The fire engines are also subject to the standard requirements of the International Civil Aviation Organisation ICAO (acceleration from 0 to 80 km/h in less than 24 seconds and a maximum speed of 140 km/h).
The airfield fire engines (total weight 38 tons, acceleration from 0 to 80 km/h in less than 24 seconds and a maximum speed of 140 km/h) exceed the standard requirements of the International Civil Aviation Organisation ICAO.
The fire service is conducted in specially designed stations, such as the fire service device workshop, breathing apparatus workshop, hose workshop/warehouse, and the fire extinguisher workshop for the maintenance of all fire extinguishers and extinguisher systems at the airport. There is also a special vehicle washing bay for device and vehicle servicing.
A total of 55 airport staff, 20 of whom are full-time, ensure protection and safety in the event of a fire.
